Springer Spaniel – Wonderful Dogs, Constant Companions
February 8, 2010
Springer Spaniel is an intelligent dog who catch on to new things easily. The Springer Spaniel is an ideal dog for country or city life. Springers are people pleasers. They love to be around people, and they are energetic, loving companions. Many owner find humor in their energetic and playful animals that bring a smile to their faces. With proper training the can excel in agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are the perfect choice for families because they are so wonderful with children. Adult supervision of children around any breed of dog is necessary to ensure the dog doesn’t become irritated.
Springers are quite friendly, and eager to please their owners. Their temperment has been compared to the popular Golden Retriever. If it is what their families are doing, they are perfectly content with just laying around the house. Human contact helps them to adjust and adapt to different levels of activity. Being a long breeder of a variety of puppies, we can attest to their absolute friendliness.
As a breed, the English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized sporting dog, and can weigh anywhere from 35-55 pounds at adulthood. They are generally very strong dogs that live anywhere between ten and fourteen years. Springers which are field bred have shorter hair and are generally more active than the show type Springers. Field bred Springers have docked tails, but their tails are docked longer than the show Springers so their tails are still functional as an alert signal while hunting.
A purebred English Springer Spaniel has a coat color of either liver and white or black and white. The tri-color coloration of black, liver, and white, is quite rare and will usually occur when the sire and dam are both tri-color. A white mark down the middle distinguishes them.
Bred to be natural hunter, English Springer Spaniels, have alot of energy so you can expect them to enjoy running aroung, sniffing out “game” and retrieving things for you. Springers have long been used as waterfowl and small game hunting dogs so they enjoy outdoor activities and being around water. Being a very old breed they have been popular dogs for a long, long time. They are one of the oldest and best established hunting and gun dog breed.
I hope this explains why springers are a wonderful fit for a variety of situations, lifestyles and families. We certainly believe and have experienced how these loving animals can find a place in anyone’s heart and home.
